There are a few differed types of irrigation systems to consider
-Underground sprinkler systems
These all come with varying pros and cons, depending on your specific lawn requirement.
These are the types of sprinklers that most consumers are familiar with. These sprinkler heads move in a circular motion, delivering a steady stream of water which is the driving force of the mechanism. Many varieties of these sprinkler heads have evolved since they were invented to meet the needs of larger lawns including mist spray heads. They can be made from a variety of materials, including aluminum or brass. The gallon water outputs can also be different depending on how much irrigation is needed. They offer full and partial circle capabilities, and are mostly used for residential lawn irrigation.
These are the second most common type of residential lawn irrigation sprinklers. Unlike impact sprinklers, these use a metal tube that sprays a fan of water onto the grass. These deliver water in a rectangular surface area and can cover large areas of lawn effectively.
Drip irrigation is a specialized type of sprinkler that uses small drops of water to deliver water directly into the root of the plant you are trying to water. These are used largely for commercial and agricultural irrigation, but are also be used for residential purposes such are gardens and landscaping. While more complex to install, these systems are great for water conservation and typically will cost you less over time.
Underground Sprinkler System
An underground sprinkler system is ideal for most consumers, since it is both effective and aesthetically pleasing. This system uses electronic and hydraulic technology to create a certain zones of water distribution. A series of pipes connected to special pressurized valves, called PVB valves, deliver the pressurized water to the correct zone in your lawn. The water is then delivered to the sprinkler heads, which can be designed to be retractable if needed. This is a very hands off approach to your lawn irrigation.
A portable sprinkler is just how it sounds, portable! Often these systems are cheaply made and ineffective. The basic design is a series of hoses hooked up to sprinkler heads, made to sit on top of your lawn and connect to your homes water supply. Unlike traditional irrigation systems, you as the consumer will need to set these up and put them away each time they are used. The water supply will also not be as effectively delivered because of lack of proper pressurization, and no control of the specific layout of your sprinkler heads.
